Crazy Eights is a card game played by two or more players. It is played using a standard deck of cards or a specialty deck designed just for this game. It is a good interactive game that helps kids practice comparison and strategy. We have played this game with children as young as 5 with great success.

Object of the Game

  • Crazy Eights is a game where the players try to get rid of all their cards. You may even already know this game by one of its unofficial names, like Eights or Swedish Rummy.
  • Crazy Eights is a fun card game that can be played with a standard 52 card deck. You need at least 2 people to play. If more than five players play, you might need two decks to have enough cards for the game to be fun. Starting the Game Typically 2 to 4 people play Crazy Eights. If there are two players, deal 7 cards each.
  • (In Crazy Eights, an 8 of any suit is wild and may be placed as any card) Card Game Rules Crazy Eights is a classic game for 2 or more players played with a standard 52 playing card deck. The objective is to have the least number of points after a player gets 100 or more points. For more classic games, check out our guides for Spit and Slapjack. • CRAZY EIGHTS TIPS & TRICKS Save your wild cards. Playing an eight will give you the power to change the color of the cards being played. When playing with action cards, the draw four card also lets you change the color of the deck.
How

The objective is to be the first player to get rid of all of their cards.

What You'll Need

A standard deck of playing cards or a deck of cards designed for playing Crazy Eights.

Setting Up Crazy Eights

Shuffle the cards.

Deal 5 cards to each player. If there are only two players deal them 7 cards each. The remaining cards are placed in a stack face down. The top card from the stack is placed face up next to the stack, starting the discard pile. This card is the first card played in the game. Play starts with the player to the left of the dealer and continues clockwise. If younger children are playing you can start with the youngest player and then continue clockwise.

Playing the Game

The first player looks at their hand and determines whether or not they have a card that matches the rank, suit, or color of the top card on the discard pile. For example, if the top card on the discard pile is a red 7 of hearts the player can play either a red, a 7, or a hearts card. If they do not have a playable card in their hand they draw one from the deck and it becomes the next players turn.

The exception to this is that EIGHTS ARE CRAZY! They can be played on any card of any suit, value, or color and the person who plays the eight gets to decide what the new suit will be.

Winning the Game

The first player to get rid of all their cards is the winner and the other players score penalty points based on the cards they have left in their hands. An eight is worth 20. Face cards are worth 10 and all others are worth face value (7 for a 7, 1 for and Ace).

Variations

Crazy Eights like so many classic card games have instructions with many variations. These instructions are the ones we use and may be slightly different than yours. If you have a variation or fun twist to the game that you would like to share please contact us so that we may add them.

When you want people to ideate quickly on an theme during a design sprint or workshop, Crazy Eights is a fantastic technique for every designer to use. This I Am Not My Pixels post will go through step by step instructions for running a successful Crazy Eight exercise.

Instructions for Crazy Eights:

Crazy 8
  • Gather together your UX supplies, including A4 paper, markers and sticky dots
  • Give each person an A4 sheet of paper and ask them to draw eight boxes on it. Or, for even more ease, simply use my free downloadable Crazy 8’s template!
  • Set a timer for 8 minutes
  • Ask the group to sketch 8 quick ideas each in 8 minutes
  • When the timer pings, everyone stops sketching
  • At this point (time-dependent) you can either:
    • Ask people to present their top three ideas to the group
    • Ask people pick their three favourite ideas. Give them 6 more minutes to sketch out these three ideas further. Then ask them to present them to the group.
  • Give everyone 2 sticky dots and ask people to vote on their favourite ideas out of the whole group

The idea is to generate as many ideas as possible within a short timeframe, focusing on quantity of ideas not quality, and then once you’ve got a bunch of divergent thinking on one topic, to begin converging on some winning ideas by voting on the favourites.

These chosen ideas can then be worked up into prototypes, more refined designs, or you could even do another round of rapid sketching on them and then another round of voting to hone in even further on the top top ideas.
